Doctors return to work in Nepal

KATMANDU: Hundreds of doctors in Nepal returned to work on Sunday after a three-day strike to protest attacks on at least two hospitals following the deaths of patients, the Nepal Medical Association said. The attacks came amid public anger at widespread medical malpractice in Nepal, where there is no system to punish offenders. Dr Kiran Shrestha, general secretary of the association, said the doctors ended the strike after police arrested three people suspected of involvement in the attacks. The doctors at private and government hospitals across Nepal halted work on Thursday, leaving thousands of patients without medical treatment, though emergency services remained open. The doctors were protesting Wednesdays mob attack on the Everest Nursing Home in Katmandu after a patient suffering from asthma died. ap
